The Use of Organically Grown Seed for 2008
The EU regulation 2092/91 governing organic farming across Europe stipulates
that organic seed must be used in production. However, there is a lack of
availability across Europe, and as a result a derogation has been in place
allowing growers to use conventional seed where no organic seed exists. Grass
seed mixtures create some problems and the simple solution of a minimum percentage
inclusion rate of organic seed has been adopted.
For 2008, the rate has been set at 65%. This means that any farmer
buying a seed mixture with 65% or more will not need permission from their
certifying authority prior to purchase.
A derogation form will still be required, but this can be submitted retrospectively
in the knowledge that a derogation will be given.
Any farmer buying a grass mixture with less than 65% will need to contact
their certifying authority before proceeding with a purchase.
