Use
(root crops)
These brassica catch crops have been part of successful rotational farming
for centuries. They can provide forage quickly and be available
at times when grass leys are unproductive.
All these crops require adequate levels of soil fertility which can either
be in the form of FYM or artificial fertiliser. As a rough guide these crops
will remove 70 kg N, 40 kg P and 40 kg K per hectare.
Use
(chicory leys)
We have heard from some of you that a mixture of chicory and clover can be
effectively used to fatten lambs. Live weight gains are in the region of 250
grammes per day and chicory is a valuable natural anthelmintic (anti-worm).
These leys can be expected to last for 5 or 6 years and given the high cost
of concentrates we have decided to offer this new ley for use this year. Please
let us know your experience.
