Use
Stock Leys are intended for profitable stock production with emphasis placed
on seasonal production, live weight gain, breeding and fattening.
Beef and sheep farmers are turning to clover as a protein source to increase
production, reduce inputs and maintain profit margins.
Cover Crop
Long leys can benefit from the addition of a fast growing cover or nurse crop.
Westerwolds, a one year ryegrass, can provide cover during establishment and
increase yields in the first year of production. Add westerwolds ryegrass
at
3 kg per acre. Cost £5.88 per acre.
Herbs
Simple mixtures containing only ryegrass and clover seem to lack some essential
quality for the grazing animal. It is remarkable how stock relish herbs, particularly
those in old pastures. There is a case for the inclusion of some herbs in
a seeds mixture to provide minerals in the diet. They are drought resistant
and improve drainage with their deep roots penetrating the subsoil. Sow herbs
in the spring or summer, preferably in long term leys when re-seeding. A mixture
of sheeps burnet, ribgrass, yarrow and sheeps parsley included at 0.5 kg per
acre costs £6.50.

Ideal for more early grass on light land, this ley will provide
good growth throughout the year and is especially good for lamb production.
It is also suitable for hay or silage and can be expected to last for at least
three years. Contains white clovers making grazing more palatable and increases
live weight gains.

A long term ley that combines perennial ryegrass with drought resistant cocksfoot.
Good all year round production can be achieved which can
either be used for grazing or cutting. Cocksfoot produces extremely rapid
recovery after defoliation and a blend of persistent white clovers makes the
sward more productive and palatable. It is essential not to undergraze this
ley.

This versatile mixture contains persistent varieties ensuring
good yields for cutting and grazing over many years. Promesse timothy is extremely
resistant to cold temperatures and provides good medium to late season growth.
The thick bottom sward structure is obtained by using mainly late perennial
ryegrasses and is complemented by highly nutritious white clover. Being very
hardy this mixture can be grown equally well in upland or lowland areas.
