The UK set to be the Largest Solar Market in Europe.

Here at Cotswold Seeds we have seen an increasing volume of enquiries about creating a durable grass cover for large scale solar parks. Some of these solar parks have an existing grass sward and only require over-seeding to patch damaged areas caused by construction machinery, while other parks are in need of a total re-seed after the solar panels have been installed.

We provide a range of options that can be tailored to suit the circumstance of each project. For instance some may require low maintenance grassland, while other projects might include grazing for stock, which needs higher quality grassland that suits livestock use.

We also provide a range of options that can improve the environmental impacts of solar parks. Wild flower meadows can be created to improve the public perception of the project and benefit  bees and insects, similarity plant species that provide food for birds can be established. These environmental enhancements can help achieve parts of the biodiversity management plan that many projects must satisfy to gain planning permission.

Solar Park Long Term Grazing Mixture

Ref: MIXSPLT
Sowing rate: 13 kg per acre (32.5 kg/ha, 3.25 g/m²)

This mix is a dual purpose ley, which provides a tough green cover around the panels and a high quality grazing ley for sheep. It includes a larger amount of perennial ryegrass to aid establishment and produce a bulky sward that will benefit livestock.

It will need to be over-seeded after year 5 to renew the quality of the ryegrasses and reduce invasive species which are lower quality.  This ensures the sward remains nutritious and beneficial as a livestock grazing ley. This mix has a higher sowing rate to compensate for the livestock grazing pressure on the sward.

Solar Park Permanent Grassland - Low Maintenance

Ref: MIXSPPG
Sowing rate: 10 kg per acre (25 kg/ha, 2.5 g/m²)

This is a mixture that has been designed to create a uniform and tidy green landscape of permanent grassland. It has been made using species that are long lasting and slow growing after they have established. This creates a low overall sward height that reduces interference with the panels.

It can be planted throughout most of the year, ideally from the middle of April to early September. The mixture includes a small amount of perennial ryegrass to encourage a quick establishment. Several species of white clover have been included because they are a long-term plants which encourage grass growth by fixing Nitrogen in the soil. This reduces the need for costly artificial inputs. This mix will need periodic topping or grazing, several times a year to keep a low, uniform height and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Buffer Strip Grass Margin Mix Two, Four or Six Plus Metre

Ref: MIXGM
Sowing rate: 10 kg per acre (25 kg/ha, 2.5 g/m²)

An ideal mixture for buffer strips on cultivated land. It is suitable for all soil types and creates habitat for small mammals, invertebrates and birds. Its main purpose is to protect vulnerable areas, such as water courses, from agrochemicals and fertilisers. This mixture is suitable for ELS and can also be used as an option in HLS. Once established, these areas only need to be cut once a year after mid July. If sowing a six metre margin we recommend leaving the outer two or three metres uncut to provide tussocky cover for insects and wildlife. The best results come from either spring sowing, when the soil temperature is above 5 degrees C, or after harvest and before mid September. Later sowings are slower to establish and can be vulnerable to slugs. Sow 25 kg per hectare.

Pollen & Nectar Flower Mix Grass & Legume Margin

Ref: MIXPN
Sowing rate: 8 kg per acre (20 kg/ha, 2 g/m²)

The mixture below is designed for ELS Pollen & Nectar margins but it can also be used for HLS. The field margin is the ideal place to create a visible habitat for insects, birds and mammals. The mixture lasts for around four years and is excellent for attracting bumblebees and butterflies. It can be sown from March until mid September. It is important to sow thinly and not too deep at around 10mm to allow the non-aggressive species to establish. Sow at 20 kg per hectare.
