Equine Pasture - No Ryegrass

Ref: MIX13
Sowing rate: 14 kg per acre (35 kg/ha, 3.5 g/m²)

Research and experience has shown that rich pasture containing ryegrass can cause dietary issues such as stomach ulcers and laminitis in equines.  Increasingly horse owners are opting to avoid sugary ryegrasses in thier paddocks altogether.  Some ryegrasses can also become unproductive after 4-5 years.  This more persistent, non-ryegrass mix is an alternative to our Permanent Horse Pasture, providing good quality and diverse forage with a lower sugar content.  Although this mix will take a little longer to establish than ryegrass based mixes, it will provide a dense resilient turf with balanced forage for grazing or hay.

Natural Pony Paddock

Ref: MIXPP
Sowing rate: 14 kg per acre (35 kg/ha, 3.5 g/m²)

It is believed that ryegrass-based leys increase the risk of laminitis. Therefore we recommend the use of a non ryegrass mixture for ponies and horses prone to this condition. This type of mixture is slower to establish than those with ryegrass, but the resulting turf is dense and more resilient. Traditional herbs are included as standard. Sow no later than mid September.

Final Trimester High Nutrient Boost

Ref: MIXSTF
Sowing rate: 17 kg per acre (42.5 kg/ha, 4.25 g/m²)

This mix can be sown in a strip or as a whole paddock. It has been created specifically to meet the nutritional requirements of mares in their final trimester. The mix is high in protein and also contains herbs which ensure the mare has a supply of essential nutrients and minerals such as copper via the Yarrow plant. Deficiencies in copper during the final trimester have been linked with Developmental Orthopaedic Disease

Weanling & Youngstock Grazing

Ref: MIXSWY
Sowing rate: 18 kg per acre (45 kg/ha, 4.5 g/m²)

Research shows that weanlings that are kept at pasture before, during and after weaning are less likely to develop stereotypical behaviours. Weanlings and youngstock also have specific nutritional requirements. This mix has been specifically designed to provide consistent energy supply throughout the season, it is high protein and yet not too high in overall energy. The inclusion of herbs ensures that pasture is rich in nutrients and minerals such as calcium which is essential for strong bone development.

Horse Pasture Over-Seeding Longer Term 4-5 Years

Ref: MIXOSH
Sowing rate: 10 kg per acre (25 kg/ha, 2.5 g/m²)

A long duration mixture for over-seeding grazing pastures which require improvement. The grasses will provide growth from spring through summer. It is important to sow after the existing grass has been grazed tightly. Horses can be left on to graze, but at a light stocking rate.

Traditional Hay Maker Long Term Hay Ley

Ref: MIXHM
Sowing rate: 13 kg per acre (32.5 kg/ha, 3.25 g/m²)

This traditional hay meadow mix is very long lasting, although slower to establish than a straight ryegrass ley, it will go on to provide good quality, bulky hay crops with low disease levels for many years. Once cut it can be used for aftermath grazing.

Sainfoin Four Year Cutting or Grazing Crop

Ref: SAI
Sowing rate: 35 kg per acre (87.5 kg/ha, 8.75 g/m²)

On the right ground this is a superb crop.  Lasting 4 years or more it is extremely valuable for finishing lambs due to it's high protein content, but it also has a number of other medicinal benefits for all types of stock.  It's tannin content ensures improved utilisation of protein by the animal, and also it is a natural wormer, reducing worm polulation both in the stock and in the field.  Tannins also prevent bloat, so feeding sainfoin as part of a legume rich diet can eliminate the risk of  bloat too.  With very deep roots sainfoin is very drought tolerant so dry, free draining soil you will struggle to beat it.  Sainfoin (also known as Healthy Hay) makes high quality hay and can also be ensiled or grazed.

Sow sainfoin with the optional 'Grass Option' mixture to help weed suppression and also bulk-up yield in the first year.  If ordered, the grass should be spun on seperately after the sainfoin has been drilled, due to the vastly different seed sizes.  Click here to see the grass option mixture.

A sainfoin ley should be managed carefully. Sainfoin produces a cut of silage in early June. Hay may be taken if preferred. Sainfoin should be cut during early flowering but may be delayed without much loss of feed value if needed. Regrowth is less than for the first cut and may be cut again or grazed. Grazing should be light and quick to avoid damage to the plant. Never set stock it or it will become thin.  Sainfoin seed can be undersown to spring cereals or direct drilled in April or May at around 30mm. (If undersown the cereal sowing rate should be reduced to 40 kg per acre.)

Sainfoin can be used as part of your greening measures, as a 'pasture legume' or a 'nitrogen fixing crop' option.

Lucerne Four Year Cutting Crop

Ref: MARSH
Sowing rate: 8 kg per acre (20 kg/ha, 2 g/m²)

The selection of the correct variety is important. We have selected Marshall as being the best this year. This offers good resistance against Verticillium wilt, a disease which is soil-borne and must be avoided if lucerne is to be grown regularly. Sow with a small seeds drill or broadcast.

Lucerne can be used as part of your greening measures, as a 'pasture legume' or a 'nitrogen fixing crop' option.

Lucerne requires a particular bacteria to be present in the soil for it to nodulate successfully. Nodules on the roots allow the plants to fix nitrogen and develop correctly.  The culture required for this can be ordered seperately.
