Lucerne - Also Known As Alfalfa

Cut three times a year, lucerne produces a protein-rich 14t DM per hectare without nitrogen fertiliser and on dry land.

No one can really understand why so little lucerne is grown in the UK, when worldwide there is 13 million hectares cropped for forage. There are however a small number of UK farms now retrying this capable legume.

Lucerne Four Year Cutting Crop

Ref: MARSH
Sowing rate: 8 kg per acre (20 kg/ha, 2 g/m²)

The selection of the correct variety is important. We have selected Marshall as being the best this year. This offers good resistance against Verticillium wilt, a disease which is soil-borne and must be avoided if lucerne is to be grown regularly. Sow with a small seeds drill or broadcast.

Lucerne can be used as part of your greening measures, as a 'pasture legume' or a 'nitrogen fixing crop' option.

Lucerne requires a particular bacteria to be present in the soil for it to nodulate successfully. Nodules on the roots allow the plants to fix nitrogen and develop correctly.  The culture required for this can be ordered seperately.

Culture for Lucerne/Sweet CLover

Sowing rate: 0.33 kg per acre (0.825 kg/ha, 0.0825 g/m²)

The use of culture provides the correct type of bacteria to initiate nodulation and is considered essential. This relatively simple process is done on the day of sowing.  Applying culture is particularly important if lucerne has not been grown in the same area previously, but even if it has been it may still be worth considering if there has been a break since the last crop was grown.

Our culture is organically certified and so can be used by both conventional and organic farmers.

PLEASE NOTE: One sachet of culture is used to treat 25kg of seed.  To order culture please enter the number of acres or hectares you wish to treat, and we will add the correct amount of sachets to your order.  Please do not order in kg's.

Grass Option

Ref: MIXLUC
Sowing rate: 3 kg per acre (7.5 kg/ha, 0.75 g/m²)

We recommend the use of a non-competitive grass mixture to be sown with lucerne/Sainfoin. There are several advantages, but the right balance between the species must be struck. The grasses increase the total yield of forage, especially in the first cut as the grasses start growing in advance of the lucerne/Sainfoin. If silage is the objective, as it is for most growers, it is easier to obtain a good fermentation because the grass supplies the necessary soluble sugars. Grasses also fill the base of the crop, therefore providing competition against weeds which enables lucerne/Sainfoin leys to be left down for an extra year or two. Sow grass and lucerne/Sainfoin seed at 10 mm.
