Intensive crops for high quality silage from one to five years

Ultimate performance short and medium term leys which provide the highest yield for silage.

Good silage depends on many factors. These include appropriate fertiliser applications, growth stage when cut and how the crop is wilted and stored. But the most important factor is to select the right crop species and varieties at the start.

Good grass silage comes from a good ley.

Quick Bulk Intensive One Year Ley

Ref: MIXQB
Sowing rate: 14 kg per acre (35 kg/ha, 3.5 g/m²)

A very fast growing ley which can be sown in the spring or autumn and is primarily grown to produce silage. However, it can be grazed and the crop can provide early turnout when sown in the autumn. Spring sowings on fertile soils with adequate moisture perform well but expectations should be lowered on drought-prone land. Unlike other ryegrasses, westerwolds will produce a stem and seed head from a spring sowing. This is useful, especially for the production of high quality horse hay.

Maximum-Yield Two Year Silage Ley

Ref: MIXA
Sowing rate: 14 kg per acre (35 kg/ha, 3.5 g/m²)

Optimum balance between the highest quality and yield for silage. Maximum-Yield produces the all important first cut, usually between the second and third week of May. At this time the grasses will have high D-values and a high soluble carbohydrate content which ensures good silage fermentation. As well as offering a potential major saving in silage additive, this improves palatability and therefore the profitability of winter milk production.

Hybrid Silage Ley Three-Four Year Silage Mixture

Ref: MIXB
Sowing rate: 14 kg per acre (35 kg/ha, 3.5 g/m²)

Early growth, high yields and good persistence make hybrid ryegrasses worth considering when the ley is expected to remain down for more than two years. Utilising excellent hybrid varieties, this ley is comparable, in terms of output, with Italian ryegrass leys. It should also be noted that the grazing potential of this ley is superior.

Fast & Vast High Clover One Year Ley

Ref: MIXFV
Sowing rate: 22 kg per acre (55 kg/ha, 5.5 g/m²)

This short term ley is for those wishing to produce a large amount of forage with little or no nitrogen fertiliser. Yields are high, especially on rich, moist soils and the majority of crops are made into silage. On light soils in dry districts autumn sowings should be made in preference to spring sowings as these will have well established roots capable of better growth in dry seasons.

Ref: MIXCGO9

‘CHOLDERTON’ Mix Four Year Plus Grazing/Cutting Ley

Ref: MIXCM
Sowing rate: 13 kg per acre (32.5 kg/ha, 3.25 g/m²)

A ley which provides good growth for early grazing or cutting. It regrows powerfully through the spring and into the summer, giving an outstanding second cut yield. The ley tolerates dry conditions due to the deep roots of cocksfoot and red clover. The mixture will last for between three and five years. If left in the ground for longer, the cocksfoot will become dominant.

Wetland Dual Purpose Long Term Mixture

Ref: MIXCGO8
Sowing rate: 13 kg per acre (32.5 kg/ha, 3.25 g/m²)

Wetland areas are often difficult to manage.  Wet, waterlogged soil means the ground is easily poached and can prevent machinery access for prolonged periods of time.  In such conditions it is critically important to select species which suit heavier/wetter soils, and often long term mixtures are prefferred where regular ploughing is impractical.

We recommend sowing a mixture of long term, late heading and hardy grasses which can be cut or grazed as required. This mix also contains white, red and alsike clovers to fill in the bottom of the sward, increase protein levels and fix all-important nitrogen.

Using a diverse, hardy and deep rooting mix will help to improve the soil's structure and increase its drainage, as well as providing a long term and mineral rich, dual purpose sward.

Lucerne Four Year Cutting Crop

Ref: MARSH
Sowing rate: 8 kg per acre (20 kg/ha, 2 g/m²)

The selection of the correct variety is important. We have selected Marshall as being the best this year. This offers good resistance against Verticillium wilt, a disease which is soil-borne and must be avoided if lucerne is to be grown regularly. Sow with a small seeds drill or broadcast.

Lucerne can be used as part of your greening measures, as a 'pasture legume' or a 'nitrogen fixing crop' option.

Lucerne requires a particular bacteria to be present in the soil for it to nodulate successfully. Nodules on the roots allow the plants to fix nitrogen and develop correctly.  The culture required for this can be ordered seperately.

Sainfoin Four Year Cutting or Grazing Crop

Ref: SAI
Sowing rate: 35 kg per acre (87.5 kg/ha, 8.75 g/m²)

On the right ground this is a superb crop.  Lasting 4 years or more it is extremely valuable for finishing lambs due to it's high protein content, but it also has a number of other medicinal benefits for all types of stock.  It's tannin content ensures improved utilisation of protein by the animal, and also it is a natural wormer, reducing worm polulation both in the stock and in the field.  Tannins also prevent bloat, so feeding sainfoin as part of a legume rich diet can eliminate the risk of  bloat too.  With very deep roots sainfoin is very drought tolerant so dry, free draining soil you will struggle to beat it.  Sainfoin (also known as Healthy Hay) makes high quality hay and can also be ensiled or grazed.

Sow sainfoin with the optional 'Grass Option' mixture to help weed suppression and also bulk-up yield in the first year.  If ordered, the grass should be spun on seperately after the sainfoin has been drilled, due to the vastly different seed sizes.  Click here to see the grass option mixture.

A sainfoin ley should be managed carefully. Sainfoin produces a cut of silage in early June. Hay may be taken if preferred. Sainfoin should be cut during early flowering but may be delayed without much loss of feed value if needed. Regrowth is less than for the first cut and may be cut again or grazed. Grazing should be light and quick to avoid damage to the plant. Never set stock it or it will become thin.  Sainfoin seed can be undersown to spring cereals or direct drilled in April or May at around 30mm. (If undersown the cereal sowing rate should be reduced to 40 kg per acre.)

Sainfoin can be used as part of your greening measures, as a 'pasture legume' or a 'nitrogen fixing crop' option.

Grass Option

Ref: MIXLUC
Sowing rate: 3 kg per acre (7.5 kg/ha, 0.75 g/m²)

We recommend the use of a non-competitive grass mixture to be sown with lucerne/Sainfoin. There are several advantages, but the right balance between the species must be struck. The grasses increase the total yield of forage, especially in the first cut as the grasses start growing in advance of the lucerne/Sainfoin. If silage is the objective, as it is for most growers, it is easier to obtain a good fermentation because the grass supplies the necessary soluble sugars. Grasses also fill the base of the crop, therefore providing competition against weeds which enables lucerne/Sainfoin leys to be left down for an extra year or two. Sow grass and lucerne/Sainfoin seed at 10 mm.

Vetch (Vicia sativa)

Ref: VET
Sowing rate: 35 kg per acre (87.5 kg/ha, 8.75 g/m²)

N Fixer. This is a winter-hardy annual which can be grown on its own to fix large amounts of N, or with westerwolds or rye for the protection of soils over the winter. This is the best legume for over wintering and can be left until May when it produces around 200kgN/ha. Best sown during September and by mid October. Vetch makes good silage too and is often mixed with oats. For this sow 25 kg vetch and 50 kg oats.
